Migrated Postings to Hugo
Like a migratory bird, I keep trying new things. I’ve tried many blogging platforms and this is the thrid time I’m doing this. In this short article I’ll explain reasons for my current setup.
Ruby - Jekyll
This is what I used before Blogger. Its nice, got lot of themes and what not. But the development experience is not friendly. And its kinda slow. Also me being me I keep forgetting syntaxes etc. So I moved on.
Substack
Its nice, got good formatting, decent footfall (i’m doing this blogging as a hobby, not for side gig, therefore not important to me), but I don’t like the fact that I’m not the owner of my content. Feels like i’m posting this content as a unpaid support for some major data mining operation. This is quite heavy on the frontend, unless you have a good internet connection this stuff will take some time to load. I’m not a fan of this.
This current blog - Hugo
This is running on Gitlab, with automated builds that get deployed to cloud, runs serverless. So the site is only rendered if you actually visit the site. This is a huge plus for me. I don’t have to pay lot for hosting. But i’d likely be in deep trouble if this site gets a lot of traffic. But I’m not expecting that.
What I’ve lost over the years
- I’ve lost the ability to comment on other blogs.
- I’ve lost the ability to comment on my own blog.
- I’ve lost the ability to track viewership.
- I’ve lost the ability to track comments.
- I’ve lost the ability to track shares
Most importantly
- Some of the old articles I had written. If I have the time I’ll add them here.
What I’ve gained
- A fresh start
- Renewed hope towards my hobby of writing and improving my cognition
- To improve my writing skills
- Distraction free setup that allows me to pusblish in my own terms
